When Persona 5 Royal was first announced and Atlus promised a series of changes to the original, critically and commercially acclaimed Persona 5 , I, like many other fans, hoped one of the additions would allow Joker to pursue a romantic relationship with one or many of the male characters in the game. Unfortunately, Atlus decided not to implement that; and, when it came to dating, opted instead to add another dateable female character and keep Joker's romantic options limited to the girls. However, one of the other big changes they implemented was overhauling Goro Akechi's confidant from an automatic one to a manual one.
Persona 5 is a role-playing game by ATLUS in which players live out a year in the life of a high school boy who gains the ability to summon facets of his psyche, known as Personas. However, a fan has been working on a mod that puts full romances, dates, and other scenes for Joker and party members Ryuji, Yusuke, Akechi, and even supporting character Mishima into the PC version of Persona 5 Royal. I played Persona 5 and Royal on PlayStation, but when the Persona games came to PC, I was most excited about the prospect of a mod to let me romance Ryuji after headcanoning my version of Joker as in love with him. Persona 3 Reload takes out an infamous transphobic scene in the remake, and it also retools other scenes to be explicitly queer.

Atlus already had a canon gay character with Jun and a canon bi protagonist with Tatsuya way back in Persona 2. There's no reason not to include some LGBT options except a conscious effort not to represent them in your games, unless you merely consider them to be laughing stock and stereotypes. Atlus may never give players the actual chance for Joker to date male characters in Persona 5, or any other spin-off and sequel games. But, by expanding Akechi's character in Royal, they did unintentionally give fans a full-fledged romantic relationship between Joker and Goro Akechi. .
